Why Journaling?

First, I must say Happy New Year to all! 2018 has been amazing, yet I know 2019 will bring double the amount of blessings! Let’s start the year off right by talking about a New Year’s resolution we should have….keeping a journal.

Journaling has always been a favorite past time of mine. It offers a great way to express your thoughts and ideas that can be reviewed over and over again for reference.

Did you know that keeping a journal is such a powerful tool that can drastically change your life for the better?

Whenever I feel the need to vent, jot down random ideas or just get creative, my journals are there to receive the info. My mom shared with me that she has been keeping journals since she was 15 years old. Needless to say, I got my love of writing and journaling from her.

In addition to this, I also noticed that people who are diligent in taking notes, journaling and planning usually are able to manifest their desires successfully.

Why is this? Writing things down forces your ideas to come to life. It helps focus on your ideas, which helps them to manifest, therefore making them real and achievable.

Backstory: On April 23rd, 2017, I attended the Success Tour in Atlanta hosted by Stacia and Ariana Pierce, a mother and daughter team.

As I jotted down notes from their riveting speeches, there was a simple, succinct quote that stood out to me [read below]. Stacia spoke with so much passion about manifesting success through writing things down. I heard testimonials from people who used her book to manifest things like better jobs, more money, book deals, more clients, and other awesome things!

What’s written is real. You must keep a journal!

Stacia has a ton of books out on manifesting success [and looking fly while doing it], and her Success Journal is a big inspiration for many women.

Here is my list on why keeping journals is essential:

  • You are more likely to act on ideas and goals when it’s written on paper
  • Helps you analyze your thought process from your past to present
  • Enhances overall creativity
  • Motivates you to become your most authentic self
  • Helps with memory and comprehension skills
  • Helps with organizational skills
  • Improves your communication skills- in both speaking and writing
  • It’s great for emotional, mental and spiritual development and healing
  • Boosts your IQ
  • Enhances self discipline and consistency
  • If you are a habitual journal keeper or plan to become one, you may even consider creating a memoir of your life and become a published author! Who knows who you may inspire!

How Do I Start?

You can of course buy a ready made journal, or get creative and make one yourself. Whatever makes you happy!

In this day and age, digital journals are also an option. You can share your thoughts and ideas with the world in the form of a public blog, or you can just create a special folder on your desktop with files containing your journal entries if you want to keep things private.

When doing digital journals and blogs, remember to back up your files so you don’t lose your precious information!

The big plus with digital journals and personal blogs is that it can be synced on your smartphones. This makes your journals available at the click of a button. I love using apps like Pages (MAC users) and Google Drive when I’m on the go. Though these apps (for me) are mostly used for note taking rather than spilling my thoughts and dreams out *smiles*

Check out this AWESOME YouTube video on how to make your own bullet journal out of materials from the Dollar Store!

Etsy is becoming a favorite of mine. You can find tons of handmade, one of a kind journals on there. You can pretty much find the materials to make one of your own at places like Walmart, Ebay, Amazon and your local arts and crafts stores 🙂

Journal Tips and Tricks to Remember:

  • Write about your goals and what you want to achieve in life. Be detailed!
  • What you love about yourself or even what you would like to improve on.
  • Be honest and vulnerable with yourself! This is your journal with your private thoughts. This is going to help you grow
  • You can write about important people in your life and your relationships with them. How do they make you feel? Where do you see yourself with them in the next 5 years? 10 years?
  • Write about events that happen in your daily life. Even if your day doesn’t seem that interesting, trust me you will look back and smile at your continued progress
  • You don’t have to write a 10 page essay, just write what’s on your mind. Even if it’s only 2 sentences, write it down!
  • Decorate your journal with drawings, stickers, pictures and other crafty items to personalize it and make it yours!
  • If you decide to start a public journal or blog, please note that what’s put on the Internet cannot be taken back. There is no such thing as privacy on the Internet. Be careful what you choose to share!

Remember, there is no right or wrong way to start and keep a journal. As long as you are consistent with your writing and are true to yourself, you’re doing great! 🙂

Hi this is quite interesting to read. I would not have thought to take up journaling any time soon but after reading your site I can see how this would be helpful. I would ask though, given that it must take a little time each day to use a journal, can you suggest any ways to keep ones discipline and concentration so you don’t get distracted? Thanks

Hi Kenny! Sorry for the late response! Thank you for your feedback! My suggestion is to set time aside each day and avoid distractions of all types. If you live with others, let them know you wish to not be disturbed during this time. 10-20 minutes is a reasonable time, but it depends on your needs! 🙂

Hi Shannon – thanks for sharing this great article. I absolutely love to journal, and this is my favourite time of year, with all those lovely blank pages waiting to be filled. As useful as apps are, nothing for me can replace the look and feel of real paper. Even if I make a mistake and have to cross something out, it all represents what I was feeling on a particular day. I have always kept a diary since being young, so I guess its just an extension of that. Do you journal what you have dreamt about at night? That’s something I love to do, and its always interesting to look back on. All the best, Diane

Hi Diane! Thanks for the feedback! I totally agree with nothing replacing good old pen and paper. To answer your questions, I do journal about my dreams and I keep that in a separate “dream journal” so I can leave room for interpretation and reference them in the future. Dreams are prophetic so it’s best to keep them separate from your everyday journal 🙂

Your post has been a source of motivation for me.I really love writing and I’ve searched for where and how I can showcase my skills.Seriously speaking journalling has came to my mind sometimes last year but the problem is how do I start what are the guidelines but reading this has really educate me on things I really need to know about it.My question is that to publish a journal do I really need online assistance to broadcast it ?.

Hi Lok Which! I’m so happy to hear this post has inspired you to start a journal! My best advice is to just start writing from your heart. You can always write your thoughts down on regular paper and type it up in a blog post if that helps.

To answer your question, digital/online journals are the same as personal blogs. It’s just like setting up a regular self hosted website on WordPress (highly recommended), find a theme you like, get your domain name and just start writing and publishing your thoughts. 🙂

Happy New Year to you as well.  I have always loved journaling.  It has helped to write down all the things that happen as it helps to deal with all the feelings that are come along with the different things that are happening and going on in your life at that moment.  It is also very interesting when you look back years later and that time seems so long ago just a memory of the past and what has happened in your life.  It is a great way to document where you were and see how far you have come when you look back on it one day.

How detailed should you be in your journal?

What do you write about most? daily stuff or big events?

      Hi Andy!

Yes journaling really allows you to see how far you’ve come on your journey. I recommend being as thorough as possible, but it isn’t always necessary. I tend to really write about more impactful things and days that are more eventful. If the day seems mundane, but I have the inkling to write something, then I’ll just write about random things on my mind.

I have always been doing things without actually righting them down and now as i am reading your article i see that i would have achieved a lot of things in life only if i could have written everything i want to be in life. I really have to get my self a journal and write everything about myself. This will really make a great impact and change in my life and to actually accomplish everything i have ever been dreaming for in life.
